Rescue teams recovered one body and saved nine people after a three-storey building collapsed at a waste management plant in Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune. Multi-agency teams continued search operations on Thursday to locate people still believed to be trapped under the debris following the accident at the Moshi waste-to-energy facility.
The structure collapsed on Wednesday afternoon after a large mound of legacy waste reportedly gave way and fell onto the building located above the waste processing plant. Officials said around 18 people were trapped beneath the rubble after the collapse. Seven people were rescued soon after the incident, while two others were pulled out safely after midnight.
A senior National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) official said one body was recovered on Thursday morning, while the locations of two more bodies were identified beneath the debris. NDRF teams said the rescue operation remained challenging due to the unstable condition of the collapsed structure and the risk of further collapse during the search.

NDRF Commandant S.B. Singh said rescuers were entering the site through narrow openings created manually, as heavy machinery could not be used because vibrations from equipment could increase the danger. He said the tilted structure, which had shifted at an angle of nearly 45 degrees, forced rescue personnel to crawl through restricted spaces while carefully removing debris.
Officials said the operation was also supported by advanced search equipment, including life detection devices, acoustic sensors, and sniffer dogs. However, rescuers had not detected further signs of life beneath the rubble at the time of the update. Teams continued efforts to reach areas where victims were suspected to be trapped.
Several employees of Antony Lara Renewable Energy, which operates the 14 MW waste-to-energy plant in partnership with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), were among those affected. The rescue operation involves personnel from the NDRF, Indian Army, PCMC Fire Brigade, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority Fire Brigade, and police authorities. Officials said the search and rescue effort would continue until all possible survivors and victims are accounted for.
