Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended warm birthday greetings to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, commending his significant contribution to India’s energy security. The Prime Minister praised Puri’s efforts in advancing self-reliance in the petroleum and natural gas sectors, highlighting his role in steering reforms and ensuring stable energy supplies for the country.
Born on February 15, 1952, Hardeep Singh Puri is a seasoned diplomat-turned-politician who has been serving as the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas since 2021. Under his leadership, India has focused on diversifying crude oil sourcing, expanding refining capacity, promoting biofuels, and accelerating the adoption of alternative energy solutions as part of its broader energy transition strategy.
Several senior leaders also conveyed their greetings on the occasion. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath wished Puri good health and long life, appreciating his dedication to public service. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta similarly extended her best wishes, praying for his continued success and well-being.

Before entering politics, Puri had a distinguished career in the Indian Foreign Service after joining in 1974. He held key diplomatic assignments, including serving as India’s Ambassador to Brazil and Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He also worked in senior capacities in the Ministries of External Affairs and Defence and played a role in multilateral trade negotiations during the Uruguay Round.
In January 2014, Puri joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, marking a transition from diplomacy to active politics. Since then, he has held important portfolios and emerged as a key figure in shaping India’s energy and urban development policies. On his birthday, leaders across party lines acknowledged his administrative experience and contributions to strengthening India’s strategic and economic interests.
