Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a state-of-the-art residential complex for parliamentarians at Baba Kharak Singh Marg near Parliament House, featuring 184 type-VII multi-storey flats named after India’s rivers, including Kosi. In a subtle jab at political rivals, Modi dismissed attempts to link the tower names to the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, emphasizing that naming them after rivers symbolizes national unity. He criticized the Congress-led UPA government (2004-2014) for failing to address MPs’ housing shortages, noting that his administration has built around 350 modern residences to resolve this issue.
The new complex, designed with a carpet area of over 5,000 sq ft per flat, offers MPs modern, spacious living spaces free from the maintenance issues plaguing older residences. Modi highlighted that these upgraded facilities will allow lawmakers to focus on public service without personal inconveniences, while also saving government funds previously spent on maintaining dilapidated houses. The complex incorporates green technology, meeting GRIHA 3-star rating standards and complying with the National Building Code (NBC) 2016, promoting energy conservation, renewable energy generation, and efficient waste management.
Modi envisioned the complex as a hub for cultural unity, urging MPs from diverse states to celebrate regional festivals together under the ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative. He suggested inviting constituents to join these celebrations, fostering a sense of community. Additionally, he proposed a unique cleanliness competition among the residential blocks, to be held two to three times annually, with awards for the cleanest premises to promote sustainability and civic pride.

The self-sufficient complex includes dedicated office spaces, staff accommodations, and a community center, enabling MPs to efficiently fulfill their roles as public representatives. Modi emphasized that this project reflects India’s 21st-century aspirations, balancing sensitivity with development. He cited his government’s broader achievements, including constructing over four crore homes for the poor, hundreds of medical colleges, and widespread piped water supply, as evidence of this commitment.
This inauguration marks a significant step in modernizing infrastructure for lawmakers while reinforcing values of unity and sustainability. By encouraging MPs to embrace collective celebrations and maintain clean premises, Modi aims to transform the complex into a model of cultural and environmental responsibility, aligning with his vision for a progressive India.
