Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'Gyan Bharatam' portal, a digital platform aimed at preserving and promoting India’s ancient manuscripts. The launch took place during an international conference on India’s manuscript heritage at Vigyan Bhawan, themed “Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy through Manuscript Heritage.” The portal serves as a digital gateway to India’s vast repository of traditional knowledge, facilitating the digitisation, conservation, and global dissemination of over 10 million manuscripts.
The Gyan Bharatam Mission, spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, seeks to survey, document, conserve, and digitise manuscripts housed in academic institutions, museums, libraries, and private collections across India. The initiative includes eight specialised working groups focusing on critical areas such as manuscript conservation, digitisation technologies, metadata standards, legal frameworks, cultural diplomacy, and decipherment of ancient scripts. These groups presented their progress at the conference’s Plenary Hall in the presence of the prime minister.
India boasts one of the world’s richest collections of ancient manuscripts, encompassing texts on philosophy, science, literature, and art. The three-day conference, hosted from September 11 to 13, brings together scholars, conservationists, technologists, and policy experts to discuss strategies for revitalising this cultural wealth and positioning it within a global knowledge dialogue.
