External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed optimism about deepening India-Philippines relations as he met Philippines President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr in Delhi on Monday, marking the start of the latter’s five-day State Visit. Jaishankar emphasized that the upcoming bilateral talks between Marcos Jr and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 5 will significantly elevate the partnership between the two nations.
The visit, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of India-Philippines diplomatic relations, is a pivotal moment to chart the future of bilateral cooperation. Marcos Jr is set to meet President Droupadi Murmu and engage in discussions aimed at bolstering ties, while also addressing regional and international issues of mutual interest. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the visit as an opportunity to strengthen a friendship rooted in shared democratic values and economic synergies.
Jaishankar, in a post on X, shared his enthusiasm: “Confident that [Marcos Jr’s] talks with PM @narendramodi tomorrow will significantly deepen our bilateral partnership.” The minister’s remarks echo his earlier statements in November 2024, when he described the India-Philippines relationship as an “enduring one” poised for a “higher orbit,” grounded in a mutual commitment to international law and pluralistic ethos.
