Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on Monday night ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the third consecutive BJP-led NDA government in Assam. Modi was received at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma and senior BJP leaders. The prime minister is scheduled to attend the oath-taking ceremony on Tuesday, where Sarma will take oath for a second consecutive term as chief minister.
The ceremony will be held at the Khanapara Veterinary College field in Guwahati, where large-scale arrangements have been made to accommodate thousands of attendees, including political leaders, party workers and dignitaries from across the country. Apart from Sarma, four other legislators — two from the BJP and one each from alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — are also expected to be sworn in as ministers.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Sarma welcomed the prime minister to the state and described the occasion as a historic moment for Assam. He said the formation of the new government marked the beginning of the NDA’s third straight term in the state and expressed hope for Modi’s continued guidance and support. Modi is expected to stay overnight at the state guest house in the Koinadhora area of Khanapara before attending the event.

Several senior BJP leaders, Union ministers, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states arrived in Guwahati through the day to attend the ceremony. Among the Union ministers who reached the city were Rajnath Singh, Sarbananda Sonowal, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chirag Paswan. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president Nitin Nabin are also expected to arrive later in the night.
Chief ministers and senior leaders from several states, including Delhi, Goa, Rajasthan, Bihar, Maharashtra, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, also travelled to Guwahati for the programme. Leaders from northeastern states such as Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur are also attending the event, reflecting the NDA’s effort to showcase regional unity and political strength in the Northeast.
The BJP-led NDA secured a decisive victory in the Assam Assembly elections held last month, returning to power with a two-thirds majority in the 126-member House. The BJP won 82 seats on its own, while alliance partners AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each. The victory has further strengthened the NDA’s political position in the Northeast, where the BJP has expanded its influence significantly over the past decade.
