Former Olympian and Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh has been appointed president of the Punjab Congress, marking a transition from the hockey field to one of the state's key political positions. The 61-year-old three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment replaces Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as the state Congress chief. His appointment comes ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections due in 2027, following weeks of discussions within the party over its state leadership.
Singh, a Jat Sikh leader from Punjab's Doaba region, has had a distinguished career in hockey before entering politics. Born in March 1965 in Mithapur, Jalandhar, he represented India at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and also captained the national team. Playing as a full-back, he was recognised for his defensive skills and received the Arjuna Award in 1989 and the Padma Shri in 1998 for his contribution to Indian hockey.
After retiring from international hockey, Singh remained involved in sports administration and served as Director of Sport and Superintendent of Police in Punjab. His electoral political career began with the Shiromani Akali Dal in the 2012 Punjab Assembly elections, when he contested from Jalandhar Cantonment and defeated his Congress rival by more than 6,000 votes. He was suspended from the SAD in 2016 and subsequently became associated with the Awaaz-e-Punjab front led by Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Singh and Sidhu later joined the Congress, with Singh being appointed general secretary, organisation, of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee after Sidhu became state Congress president. He won the Jalandhar Cantonment seat again in the 2017 Assembly elections, defeating SAD candidate Sarabjit Singh Makkar by more than 29,000 votes. He retained the constituency for a third consecutive term in 2022, defeating an Aam Aadmi Party candidate even as the Congress was reduced to 18 seats in the 117-member Assembly.
During the previous Congress government led by Charanjit Singh Channi, Singh handled the education and sports portfolios. As an opposition MLA, he has frequently raised issues concerning Punjab, including law and order, sports, education and matters related to his constituency. In July, he was appointed co-chairperson of the Congress manifesto committee for the 2027 Assembly elections and is also serving as the AICC secretary in charge of Jammu and Kashmir.
His appointment comes amid the Congress's existing regional and social representation in Punjab, with Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa representing the Jat Sikh community, while Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi is a prominent Dalit leader and heads the party's campaign committee. Party sources said the decision to replace Warring followed organisational feedback gathered by Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot, who held meetings with state leaders before submitting his report to the high command.
