A Pakistani entrepreneur has publicly defended Sam Altman, sharing a personal account of kindness at a time when the tech leader faces criticism from some former associates who have described him in starkly negative terms. The remarks follow a widely discussed profile that cited several individuals familiar with Altman’s leadership, with some alleging he could be manipulative or “unconstrained by truth.” The claims have reignited debate around Altman’s management style and decision-making approach as OpenAI continues to expand its global influence in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector.
Amid the controversy, Waqas Ali, a Pakistani-origin founder based in the United States, offered a contrasting perspective rooted in his personal experience. Recalling an early interaction during his time at Y Combinator in 2015, Ali said Altman defied the intimidating image often associated with Silicon Valley leaders. Instead, he described an approachable figure willing to engage with early-stage entrepreneurs.
According to Ali, Altman invited him to his San Francisco residence for a casual meeting over tea, where he reviewed Ali’s pitch deck and provided constructive feedback. Beyond that initial interaction, Altman reportedly introduced him to industry contacts, helping him gain visibility and navigate the complexities of building a startup. Ali emphasised that such gestures had a meaningful impact at a formative stage of his entrepreneurial journey.

Ali also noted that his later interactions with Altman remained positive, even when business decisions did not align. In one instance, Altman declined to invest in a subsequent venture but continued to offer encouragement and professional guidance. While acknowledging that his engagement with Altman was limited, Ali said his experiences did not reflect the more critical portrayals that have recently surfaced.
The episode underscores a broader divide in perceptions surrounding one of the most influential figures in the technology industry. As OpenAI plays a central role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence, scrutiny of its leadership has intensified. While critics highlight concerns around transparency and leadership style, supporters point to individual interactions that depict Altman as supportive and accessible. The contrasting accounts illustrate the complexity of evaluating leadership in high-stakes, fast-moving sectors, where public reputation is often shaped by both personal experiences and institutional decisions.
