Pakistan’s military said on Wednesday that it intercepted four drones allegedly launched from Afghanistan, marking the latest escalation in tensions between the two neighbours amid ongoing cross-border hostilities. The incident comes amid a series of recent confrontations following deadly strikes and counterclaims between Pakistani forces and the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s military, Afghan Taliban forces sent four “rudimentary drones” across the border into Pakistan’s Balochistan region on Tuesday. The military said the drones were detected and neutralised by its air defence systems before they could cause any damage. It described the aerial incursions as hostile actions and warned of a strong response if such incidents continue.
“If the Afghan Taliban continue to provoke Pakistan, they would receive a befitting response which would cost them heavily,” the statement said, underscoring rising tensions along the border. The military did not provide further details on the type of drones intercepted or whether there were any casualties or material damage as a result of the incident.

The developments come shortly after Afghanistan’s Taliban-led defence ministry claimed it had conducted aerial operations targeting militant groups in Pakistan’s border provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In a post on social media platform X, the ministry said the strikes had resulted in casualties among members of the Islamic State group. However, Pakistan has not independently confirmed those claims.
The exchange of accusations reflects a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries, which have repeatedly clashed over security concerns along their porous 2,600-kilometre border. Pakistan has long accused militant groups operating from Afghan territory of launching attacks inside its borders, while the Taliban government has denied allowing such activity.
Analysts say the latest incident highlights the fragility of border security and the risk of further escalation between Islamabad and Kabul. With both sides accusing each other of cross-border strikes and drone incursions, diplomatic engagement remains limited, raising concerns over sustained instability in the region if tensions continue to rise.
