An oleum (fuming sulphuric acid) gas leak was reported at a chemical manufacturing unit in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Monday afternoon, officials said, adding that no injuries or health impacts have been reported so far. Authorities confirmed the situation was brought under control after an immediate response from emergency teams.
According to District Collector and District Disaster Management Authority chief Dr Indu Rani Jakhar, the incident occurred at around 2 pm at the Bhageria Chemicals Company—formerly known as Zenith Chemicals—located in the MIDC D-Zone industrial belt near Salwad and Pasthal villages. Upon receiving the alert, district officials and emergency responders rushed to the site to assess and contain the leak.
As a precautionary measure, the district administration advised residents in nearby areas to stay away from the affected zone until the situation was fully secured. Officials said monitoring was underway to ensure that the gas had fully dissipated and that there was no lingering risk to public health or the environment.
