Fresh tensions erupted in Noida on Tuesday as factory workers allegedly pelted stones at police personnel, a day after large-scale protests over wage demands turned violent and disrupted normal life across the industrial hub. The incidents come amid heightened unrest among labour groups seeking improved pay and working conditions.
According to officials, the clashes followed widespread demonstrations on Monday, when tens of thousands of workers gathered at multiple locations across Noida and adjoining areas. The protests led to severe traffic congestion and law-and-order challenges, prompting a heavy police deployment to contain the situation.
In response to the unrest, the Uttar Pradesh Government announced a hike in minimum wages across worker categories, with revised rates implemented retrospectively from April 1. Authorities said the decision was taken after consultations with employers’ bodies and labour organisations to ensure a balanced outcome.

Police officials stated that the protests had largely dispersed peacefully before “outsiders” allegedly attempted to incite further violence. Several such individuals have been detained, and at least seven FIRs have been registered in connection with the incidents. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the escalation.
A police statement noted that approximately 40,000 to 45,000 workers from various sectors had gathered at over 80 locations across the district, leading to widespread disruptions. Authorities emphasised that law enforcement personnel exercised restraint and used minimal force while prioritising public safety and maintaining order.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar described the violence as a “well-planned conspiracy” and said agencies are probing possible links, including a suspected Pakistan connection in light of recent terror-related arrests in the region. Officials added that sensitive areas remain under close surveillance, and strict legal action will be taken against those found involved in the disturbances.
