A pregnant woman gave birth inside a Brooklyn criminal courtroom on Friday night while waiting to be arraigned on drug possession charges, triggering questions over how custody procedures are handled for medically vulnerable detainees. The woman, identified as 33-year-old Samantha Randazzo, was reportedly in court awaiting arraignment when she went into labour and delivered a baby boy before proceedings could begin.
According to statements from the Legal Aid Society and other public defender organisations, she had been in custody for more than 24 hours prior to the incident. Her lawyer, Wynton Sharpe, said the situation unfolded suddenly inside the courtroom. “We saw it. She didn't have to say anything. We were like, oh OK, this is happening, like, now,” he told the New York Times, describing the moment when Randazzo’s labour began in front of court personnel, law enforcement officers, and members of the public.
Randazzo, who was nine months pregnant at the time of her arrest, had been taken into custody the previous evening on charges of drug possession and trespassing. Police reportedly found her during an incident in Brooklyn’s Sheepshead Bay area, after which she was also evaluated at a hospital following complaints of withdrawal symptoms. She was later discharged and brought back to custody before appearing in court.

According to officials, she had not initially informed officers of her pregnancy at the time of arrest and was reportedly wearing loose clothing. However, her condition became known later during processing. After medical evaluation at a hospital early Friday morning, she was cleared and returned for arraignment later that day, before going into labour inside the courtroom.Court administration officials confirmed that both mother and baby were in stable condition following the birth.
A spokesperson for the New York Office of Court Administration said the situation was being reviewed, while public defenders and legal advocacy groups called for a full investigation into the handling of the case.Lawyers have raised concerns about custody protocols for pregnant detainees, questioning whether adequate medical safeguards and emergency response procedures were in place. They have urged authorities, including the New York City Police Department and court administration officials, to examine whether systemic failures contributed to the incident.
