Ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand, opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislators have been moved to a hotel in Ranchi as part of a strategic consolidation effort, according to alliance sources. The development comes as political parties intensify preparations for voting to fill two vacant seats in the Upper House of Parliament, with both sides working to secure their respective positions ahead of the electoral contest.
Leader of Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly Babulal Marandi confirmed that NDA legislators would hold internal meetings on June 18 to finalise their voting strategy. While addressing the media, Marandi indicated that discussions would focus on coordination among alliance members and confidence-building measures ahead of the election. He also expressed optimism about the prospects of BJP-backed Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani in one of the two available seats.
The NDA’s decision to shift MLAs to a hotel is being viewed as a precautionary measure aimed at preventing possible cross-voting or political pressure ahead of the election. According to political arithmetic in the Jharkhand Assembly, a candidate requires at least 28 first-preference votes to secure victory in the Rajya Sabha polls. However, the NDA currently holds 24 MLAs, making its position numerically weaker unless additional support or cross-voting comes into play.

At present, the ruling INDIA bloc holds a clear majority in the state Assembly with 56 members, including 34 from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), 16 from the Congress, four from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and two from the CPI(ML) Liberation. The NDA’s strength comprises 21 BJP MLAs along with one each from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), AJSU Party, and JD(U), while the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha has one member.
The two Rajya Sabha vacancies arose following the death of JMM co-founder Shibu Soren and the completion of the tenure of BJP leader Deepak Prakash. The elections to fill these seats have heightened political activity in the state, with both the ruling alliance and the opposition seeking to strengthen their positions through last-minute strategic alignments.
As voting approaches, the outcome is expected to depend heavily on party discipline and possible cross-voting from undecided legislators. While the NDA remains numerically behind, its leadership has projected confidence in securing at least one seat. The INDIA bloc, on the other hand, is working to maintain cohesion within its ranks to avoid any surprises during the tightly contested electoral process.
