Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran on Saturday alleged that "horse-trading" was taking place in the state's political landscape, claiming that efforts were being made to help the ruling TVK-led alliance demonstrate its majority in the Legislative Assembly. Nagendran made the remarks while speaking to reporters after attending the Bharatiya Janata Party's district executive meeting in Dindigul, reigniting a political controversy that has been simmering in the state for over a month.
Addressing the media, Nagendran alleged that attempts were being made to influence legislators in favour of the ruling alliance. "It is true that horse-trading is going on in Tamil Nadu. The horse-trading people have taken the lead in talking to show their government a majority," he said. While making the allegation, the BJP leader did not identify any individuals or provide evidence to substantiate the claim. His remarks, however, are likely to intensify the ongoing political debate over the stability of the ruling coalition and the conduct of lawmakers in the Assembly.
The controversy traces its origins to June 1, when TVK MLA N. Elaiyaraja alleged that he had been offered ₹35 crore and subjected to threats in an attempt to influence his vote on a legislative resolution. The allegation sparked widespread political attention and prompted law enforcement authorities to launch an investigation. According to officials, a criminal case was registered based on the complaint, and police subsequently arrested three individuals in connection with the alleged attempt to influence the legislator.

The case has since become a major point of contention between the ruling alliance and opposition parties. While opposition leaders have cited the allegations as evidence of attempts to manipulate legislative proceedings, the investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not publicly disclosed the full details of the evidence gathered. Police have also not announced whether additional arrests or charges are likely as the probe progresses. The ruling alliance has not officially responded to Nagendran's latest allegations, and no judicial findings have yet established the claims made by political leaders.
Horse-trading, a term commonly used in Indian politics to describe alleged attempts to influence legislators through monetary inducements or other incentives, has frequently surfaced during periods of political uncertainty or closely contested legislative votes. Such allegations have often led to investigations and legal proceedings, particularly when accompanied by formal complaints from elected representatives. However, proving such claims typically requires substantial evidence, including financial records, witness testimony or other corroborative material.
Nagendran's latest remarks are expected to further sharpen political exchanges in Tamil Nadu, where parties have been engaged in a war of words over the alleged attempts to influence legislators. As the police investigation into the June 1 complaint continues, the allegations remain unproven, and authorities have urged that the legal process be allowed to run its course. The outcome of the investigation could have significant political implications, particularly if it uncovers evidence supporting or disproving the claims of inducements made to members of the Legislative Assembly.
