The Indian government successfully evacuated 3,597 citizens from Iran and 818 from Israel under Operation Sindhu, amid escalating tensions in the region, according to data shared by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in a Rajya Sabha response on Thursday.
Of the 3,597 evacuees from Iran, 1,521 hailed from Jammu and Kashmir, 1,198 from Uttar Pradesh, 223 from Ladakh, 135 from Karnataka, 89 from Maharashtra, and 50 from Bihar, among others. From Israel, 818 citizens were brought back, including 151 from West Bengal and 93 from Maharashtra. No Indian casualties were reported in the recent Iran-Israel conflict, Singh confirmed.
Before the conflict, approximately 10,000 Indians, including students, workers, seafarers, and pilgrims, resided in Iran, while 40,100, including caregivers, construction workers, and business professionals, were in Israel. Operation Sindhu ensured the safe return of 4,415 Indian nationals in total.

In a separate query, Singh addressed concerns about Indian workers in the Gulf, where 7,001 deaths were reported in 2024 and 3,723 in 2025 (till June). The Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) provides financial and legal aid, including boarding, lodging, and repatriation, to distressed workers on a means-tested basis.
Singh also raised concerns about 13 Indian nationals still in the Russian armed forces, with 12 reported missing. Of the 127 Indians initially involved, 98 have been discharged following high-level talks with Russian authorities, who have been urged to ensure the safety and release of the remaining individuals.
Additionally, Singh shared data on Indian citizenship renunciations: 1,44,017 in 2019; 85,256 in 2020; 1,63,370 in 2021; 2,25,620 in 2022; 2,16,219 in 2023; and 2,06,378 in 2024, reflecting a significant trend of emigration.
