The Lok Sabha was forced to adjourn until 2 pm on Monday as opposition MPs, led by Congress, staged noisy protests demanding a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The uproar, marked by slogan-shouting and placard-waving, erupted as soon as the House convened at 11 am, stalling proceedings and preventing the Question Hour from functioning.
Speaker Om Birla expressed frustration, accusing the opposition of systematically disrupting the House and undermining its dignity. “You have been elected to represent the hopes of lakhs of people, but you are not allowing the House to function smoothly,” he said, noting that the protests were obstructing important discussions. Birla urged members to raise their concerns through dialogue and allow the session to proceed, promising ample time to address their issues. However, the opposition’s relentless protests forced the adjournment.
The SIR exercise, initiated by the Election Commission ahead of Bihar’s Assembly elections, has become a flashpoint, with the opposition alleging irregularities in the voter revision process. The Monsoon Session, which began on July 21, has seen little progress, with disruptions initially sparked by demands for a discussion on Operation Sindoor and now dominated by the SIR controversy. Apart from a brief discussion on Operation Sindoor in both Houses, repeated adjournments have stalled parliamentary business, raising concerns about the session’s productivity.
