In a major breakthrough for security forces in Telangana, 37 Maoist cadres, including three senior leaders, surrendered in Hyderabad, marking one of the largest collective surrenders in recent months. The surrender, which included weapons and ammunition, signifies a significant weakening of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) in the region, following relentless pressure from law enforcement and military operations.
Among those who laid down arms were high-profile leaders such as Koyyada Sambaiah alias Azad, Appasi Narayana alias Ramesh, and Muchaki Somada alias Erra. These senior cadres, each carrying rewards of Rs 20 lakh, had been underground for over three decades and held influential positions within the organization’s hierarchy. The surrender also involved the handing over of a substantial cache of firearms, including an AK-47, two SLRs, and multiple rifles, along with over 340 rounds of live ammunition.
This coordinated surrender underscores the declining strength and operational capacity of the Maoist organization in Telangana. Police officials attribute this to sustained counter-insurgency efforts, internal ideological differences, and the increasing disillusionment among cadres. The Telangana Director General of Police, B Shivadhar Reddy, expressed confidence that this development would further weaken the insurgent network and facilitate efforts to rehabilitate ex-Maoists into mainstream society.

The surrender also came with a significant reward payout of Rs 1.41 crore, administered as per the state’s rehabilitation policy, aimed at incentivizing Maoists to return to civilian life. Despite this major setback, security agencies continue to pursue the remaining 64 Maoists active in Telangana, of whom nine are believed to still operate in the state. Authorities are optimistic that more cadres will follow suit, further dismantling the organization’s influence.
This series of surrenders reflects a crucial victory for Telangana's ongoing efforts to combat Maoist extremism and restore peace in affected regions. The police have reiterated their commitment to providing full support and rehabilitation to those who choose to abandon militancy and embrace a peaceful life.
