The niece of Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee was found dead at her residence in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Tuesday afternoon. Local law enforcement confirmed that the deceased, identified as 28-year-old Brishti Mukherjee, was discovered hanging inside a room on the second floor of her family home. The body of Bristi Mukherjee (28) was recovered from a room on the second floor of her house at Kusumba village in Rampurhat area this afternoon, a senior officer said, citing preliminary reports from the ground. 

Senior police officials, including team members under Birbhum Superintendent of Police, arrived at the spot in Kusumba village shortly after receiving the alert. A formal investigation has been launched to determine the exact sequence of events, and a case of mysterious death has been initially registered. While the initial physical evidence collected from the scene strongly points toward suicide, authorities have emphasized that the definitive cause of death will only be certified once the medical procedures are finalized. 

According to detailed statements provided by her family members to news agencies, Mukherjee had been battling severe clinical depression for the past few years and was undergoing regular medical treatment. Relatives revealed that her psychological distress had compounded significantly in recent times due to professional and personal crises. Specifically, she was reportedly navigating stressful legal divorce proceedings at the time of her death.

The family also highlighted that a major trigger for her deteriorating mental health was the sudden loss of her livelihood. Mukherjee had previously faced direct administrative allegations regarding irregularities tied to the school service recruitment process. She subsequently lost her position as a primary school teacher following a sweeping Supreme Court order that cancelled thousands of state recruitments in government-aided schools due to widespread institutional corruption. 

The local Rampurhat police department has completed the initial inquest at the residential property and securely transferred the body to the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for a comprehensive post-mortem examination. “The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. An investigation is underway. The circumstances leading to the death will be established after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries,” a police officer told news agency PTI. State political leaders have expressed grief over the tragedy, while administrative forces continue to record statements from close relatives.
