Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday dismissed reports claiming a secret midnight meeting with Uddhav Thackeray at his official residence, ‘Varsha’ bungalow in Mumbai. The clarification comes amid heightened political activity in the state ahead of the upcoming Legislative Council elections, which have triggered intense speculation and strategic positioning among key parties.
The rumours originated from a social media post by a handle named “Prabuddh Bharat,” which alleged that Thackeray had visited the Chief Minister’s residence late at night. The post suggested that the purported meeting was aimed at ensuring an unopposed election to the Maharashtra Legislative Council, allegedly to avoid potential “horse-trading” during the electoral process.
Refuting the claims, Fadnavis stated unequivocally that no such meeting had taken place. He emphasised that there was no need for secrecy in any interaction between him and Thackeray, noting that both leaders could meet openly if required. He also underlined that there were currently no issues between them that would necessitate covert discussions.

The Chief Minister strongly criticised those spreading the rumours, labelling them as “liars” and warning of legal action against individuals or platforms deliberately circulating false information. His remarks signal a firm stance by the state leadership against misinformation during a politically sensitive period.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Raut offered a guarded response when asked about the alleged meeting, stating that only Fadnavis and Thackeray could confirm whether such an interaction occurred. The political atmosphere has been further charged by the announcement of elections for nine seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, scheduled for May 12.
Thackeray’s current term in the Council is set to end on May 13, and leaders within the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi have urged him to seek re-election. Supriya Sule and other alliance members, including Congress leaders, have publicly backed his candidature. However, Thackeray has yet to clarify whether he will contest the election or nominate another candidate, keeping political observers guessing.
