French President Emmanuel Macron is set to reaffirm France’s commitment to maintaining the ceasefire in Lebanon and supporting the country’s sovereignty during talks in Paris on Tuesday with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, according to the French presidency. The meeting comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent conflict involving Israel and Hezbollah.
Macron’s office said the discussions will focus on ensuring the stability of the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire, while also addressing urgent humanitarian needs, particularly for populations displaced by recent hostilities. The talks are also expected to cover economic and financial reforms in Lebanon, which France views as essential for strengthening state institutions, supporting reconstruction, and restoring long-term stability and prosperity.
The diplomatic engagement follows a sharp escalation in violence in the region after months of conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. Lebanon and Israel recently held their first direct diplomatic talks in decades in Washington, a move seen as part of broader international efforts to de-escalate tensions. The discussions reportedly came after a ceasefire arrangement was announced with U.S. involvement.

However, the fragile truce has already faced challenges. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) recently reported an attack in southern Lebanon in which one French peacekeeper was killed and three others were injured. Both French authorities and UNIFIL attributed the incident to Hezbollah, though the group has denied responsibility. Macron has called for a full investigation and accountability, stressing that UN peacekeepers must not be targeted under any circumstances.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s visit to Paris also follows consultations with European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg, where regional stability in the Middle East was a key agenda item. The broader diplomatic context includes parallel discussions involving the United States, Iran, and regional actors aimed at preventing further escalation and preserving ceasefire agreements.
As Lebanon continues to navigate political and economic crises alongside security challenges, France has positioned itself as a key international supporter of reforms and reconstruction efforts. Tuesday’s meeting is expected to reinforce Paris’s role in backing Lebanon’s sovereignty while urging sustained adherence to the ceasefire framework.
