Madhya Pradesh is preparing to undertake one of its largest regional development initiatives with the proposed Ujjain-Indore Metropolitan Region (UIMR), a project designed to transform the Malwa region into a major industrial, logistics and tourism hub. Backed by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, the ambitious plan seeks to integrate urban and economic growth across six districts while supporting the broader vision of a developed India by 2047.
The proposed metropolitan region will span more than 16,000 square kilometres and cover six districts, 38 tehsils and 2,781 villages. Officials estimate that nearly 1.25 crore people will fall within the development zone. The project aims to create a multi-nodal growth corridor centred around Indore and Ujjain, linking urban centres with surrounding semi-urban and rural areas through modern infrastructure and economic integration.
Industrial development forms a key component of the proposal. Authorities have earmarked more than 13,500 hectares for industrial use and plan to establish 14 new industrial parks across the region. Among the major initiatives are the expansion of Pithampur as a hub for electric vehicles and advanced engineering, the growth of Vikram Udyogpuri in Ujjain as a major industrial city, and the development of Ratlam as a logistics and export centre connected to national freight corridors.

The state government expects the project to generate approximately five lakh employment opportunities, particularly for young people entering the workforce. Enhanced connectivity with the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor is also expected to improve access to ports, logistics networks and export markets, strengthening the region's position as a manufacturing destination.
A central feature of the development blueprint is the proposed "60-minute access" model. Infrastructure projects under consideration include a new greenfield corridor connecting Indore and Ujjain, integration with the Indore-Bhopal Expressway, metro expansion between Indore and Ujjain, and high-speed regional transport links connecting industrial and commercial hubs. The objective is to enable residents and businesses to reach major economic centres within an hour.
The government has also proposed a large-scale land pooling mechanism aimed at ensuring farmer participation in the region's growth. Under the model, farmers in 17 villages linked to the Indore-Pithampur Economic Corridor would receive 60 percent developed land in exchange for land contributed to the project. Officials say this approach is intended to make local communities active stakeholders in development while promoting sustainable urban expansion and long-term economic growth throughout the Malwa region.
