Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday announced that the state government is moving ahead with plans to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He said the proposal will soon be rolled out and has been opened for public consultation through a newly launched online portal. The announcement was made during a media interaction where he outlined the government’s intent to seek wider public participation before finalising the framework.
Yadav said the state has initiated a structured consultation process to ensure that citizens from all sections of society can share their opinions. He emphasised that suggestions from the public would play an important role in shaping the final form of the proposed law. According to him, the government aims to make the process transparent and inclusive by inviting feedback directly through an official website dedicated to the UCC initiative.
The Chief Minister informed that a six-member committee has been constituted to lead the consultation exercise. The panel is headed by a retired Supreme Court judge and is tasked with collecting views from religious leaders, social groups, and other stakeholders. The committee is currently touring different districts to engage with communities and understand their perspectives on implementing a uniform legal framework.

Yadav said the need for a Uniform Civil Code arises from the objective of reducing legal and social differences based on religion or personal laws. He stated that matters related to divorce, family traditions, and other personal issues should be governed under a more uniform system. He added that the government believes such a framework could help streamline legal processes and reduce inconsistencies across communities.
He further noted that some states, including Uttarakhand and Gujarat, have already taken steps toward adopting or preparing frameworks related to the UCC. Madhya Pradesh, he said, intends to move forward in a similar direction after completing its consultation and review process. The government, according to him, is studying these developments as reference points while designing its own approach.
Yadav also said the committee will compile all inputs gathered during its statewide consultations and prepare a detailed report. Based on this report, a draft bill will be submitted to the state government for consideration. He reiterated that the administration is keen to implement the Uniform Civil Code at the earliest possible stage, while urging citizens, social organisations, and religious bodies to actively participate through the online consultation portal.
