Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff, with the government confirming that he will assume charge on June 30, succeeding the incumbent Army chief upon his retirement from service. The announcement marks a key leadership transition at the top of the Indian Army, formalising succession at a time of evolving regional and strategic security dynamics.
The appointment was approved by the President of India, according to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Defence. Lt Gen Seth will assume the position in the substantive rank of General and is scheduled to serve until August 31, 2028. His elevation places him at the helm of the Indian Army for a tenure spanning more than two years, during which he will be responsible for overseeing operational readiness, modernisation efforts, and institutional reforms.
At the time of his appointment, Lt Gen Seth was serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), a position he assumed in April this year. His brief tenure as the Army’s second-highest-ranking officer provided him with exposure to key administrative and strategic responsibilities at the Army Headquarters, further consolidating his role in shaping operational priorities and capability development initiatives.

Lt Gen Seth will take over from the current Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, who is set to retire from service on June 30. The transition follows established succession protocols within the armed forces, ensuring continuity of command at the highest level. The formal change of leadership is expected to be marked by standard ceremonial procedures customary to the Indian Army.
A distinguished officer of the Indian Army, Lt Gen Seth is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla. He was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986, beginning a military career that has spanned nearly four decades. Over the years, he has held a wide range of command, staff, and instructional appointments across diverse operational environments.
Throughout his service, Lt Gen Seth has built extensive experience across operational, strategic, capability development, and institutional domains. His career has included leadership roles that required engagement with both field formations and higher defence management structures, reflecting a blend of tactical expertise and strategic-level decision-making responsibilities. His elevation to the top post is seen as a continuation of the Army’s emphasis on experienced leadership drawn from diverse operational backgrounds.
As he prepares to take charge, Lt Gen Seth will inherit a force undergoing continued modernisation and structural adaptation in response to evolving security challenges. His tenure is expected to focus on strengthening operational preparedness, enhancing technological integration, and furthering ongoing reforms within the Army’s organisational framework, while maintaining continuity in the institution’s long-standing strategic priorities.
