In a tragic outcome, an eight-year-old boy from Kotilingala village in Velgatoor Mandal, Telangana, passed away on Monday, nearly 15 months after suffering a dog bite. The family of the deceased, Maniteja, spent over ₹50 lakh on medical treatment in a desperate attempt to save his life.
The incident occurred on December 26, 2024, when the family had returned to their native village to attend a relative’s wedding. While playing outside with other children, Maniteja was bitten by a dog on his neck and shoulder. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital and administered an anti-rabies vaccination, after which his condition initially appeared stable.
Within days, however, Maniteja developed a fever, and his health deteriorated rapidly. He was admitted to a hospital where he experienced severe breathing difficulties, prompting a transfer to a private hospital in Hyderabad for advanced care. Doctors later revealed that a critical nerve connecting his spinal cord to the brain had been severely affected, leaving him dependent on ventilator support for several months.

Despite continuous medical intervention and intensive care, Maniteja’s condition did not improve. His parents, Srinivas, a software professional in Hyderabad, and Madhavi, exhausted their financial resources in efforts to save their only child. The family’s ordeal highlights the long-term and devastating impact of delayed complications following animal bites.
Maniteja’s passing has left the family and the local community in deep mourning. Medical experts emphasize the importance of prompt treatment and monitoring following dog bites, particularly in children, to prevent severe neurological complications.
This heartbreaking incident underscores the lingering dangers associated with rabies and other post-bite infections, even with early vaccination, and the need for continued public awareness and preventive measures.
