Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday met Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in New Delhi to inquire about his health following a recent knee replacement surgery. The minister said the Dalai Lama was in good spirits and recovering well, offering reassurance about the 90-year-old spiritual leader’s post-surgery condition. The meeting was also shared by Rijiju on social media platform X.
In his post, Rijiju wrote that he visited the Dalai Lama to check on his recovery and expressed relief at seeing him in a positive frame of mind. He said he sought the spiritual leader’s blessings during the meeting and described the interaction as deeply inspiring, noting his continued admiration for the Dalai Lama’s compassion, wisdom, and humility.
The visit comes shortly after the Dalai Lama underwent a successful left knee replacement surgery at a hospital in New Delhi. His personal physician, Dr Tsetan Dorji Sadutshang, had earlier confirmed that the procedure was completed successfully and that the spiritual leader returned to his room in stable condition following the operation.

According to medical updates from his office, the Dalai Lama’s recovery has been progressing steadily under close supervision. Hospital staff and medical teams have been appreciated for their care and professionalism during his treatment. Reports indicate that he remains in good spirits as he continues his recovery process.
This was not the first knee-related procedure for the Tibetan leader, who also underwent a right knee replacement surgery in New York in 2024. He recovered well from that earlier procedure and resumed public engagements soon after, continuing his global spiritual activities and public appearances.
Following his recovery, the Dalai Lama is expected to travel to Ladakh later this month for his traditional summer stay, a practice he has followed for years to avoid the monsoon season in Dharamshala. The visit is also expected to coincide with his 91st birthday on July 6, with celebrations likely to take place during his stay.
