At least 26 people have died and 11 others have been injured as persistent monsoon rainfall continues to affect several parts of Kerala. Four people remain missing, while 27,048 residents have been displaced by flooding, waterlogging and other rain-related disruptions across the southern state, according to the latest official figures.
The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Kerala on Wednesday, indicating the possibility of intense showers capable of causing localised flooding and travel disruption. Pathanamthitta and Kottayam were placed under a red alert during the morning, signalling the need for authorities and residents to take immediate precautions.
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan confirmed the revised death toll and announced relief measures for families affected by the continuing monsoon emergency. State agencies are working to assist displaced residents and provide essential support in vulnerable areas, although detailed information about the measures and the condition of missing people was not immediately available.

Heavy rainfall has left roads waterlogged and disrupted normal movement in several locations, including urban areas. Continued showers could further raise water levels in low-lying regions and increase the risk of landslides in hilly districts. Residents in areas covered by weather warnings have been advised to follow directions issued by district administrations.
The IMD’s Wednesday bulletin forecast widespread rainfall over Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Telangana between August 5 and August 11. The extended spell of wet weather could complicate relief operations and increase pressure on local infrastructure. Authorities are expected to monitor rainfall levels, river conditions and areas already affected by flooding.
Disaster-response teams and local officials remain on alert as the weather department continues to update district-level warnings. People living near rivers, unstable slopes and flood-prone areas have been urged to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall. The toll may be revised as officials receive further information from affected districts.
