The Kerala government has issued a ‘dies non’ warning to its employees in view of the nationwide Bharat Bandh called by central trade unions on Thursday, cautioning that those absent from duty without valid reasons will lose one day’s salary. The directive was issued amid concerns that the strike could significantly disrupt government functioning across the state.
The term ‘dies non’, a Latin expression meaning “no day,” is used in government service rules to denote a day that does not count as duty. When declared, the day is excluded from service benefits, and the employee does not receive a salary for that period. It can also affect leave calculations and service continuity, depending on applicable rules. The state government’s warning signals its intent to maintain administrative operations during the strike.
The Bharat Bandh was called by a joint forum of central trade unions demanding the repeal of four labour codes introduced by the Union government and the withdrawal of certain policy measures. Protesters argue that the labour codes dilute workers’ rights and weaken collective bargaining protections, while the Centre has maintained that the reforms aim to simplify and modernise labour laws.

In Kerala, normal public life was partially affected as transport, banking, and some government services experienced disruptions. Employees of the state-run Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), along with sections of private bus operators and auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers, reportedly joined the protest, leading to the suspension of public transport services in several areas.
However, government staff and teachers’ organisations affiliated with the Congress are reported to have stayed away from the bandh. Meanwhile, reports indicated participation by trade union members at key industrial units, including the Kochi refinery. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure law and order and the smooth functioning of essential services.
