Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Tuesday that the state has released nearly 150 tmcft of excess water to Tamil Nadu this year due to abundant rainfall. Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, he clarified that this surplus flow is over and above the 177.25 tmcft mandated by the Supreme Court’s final verdict on Cauvery water sharing. The additional release highlights Karnataka’s compliance amid favorable monsoon conditions while addressing interstate river management dynamics.
Siddaramaiah strongly advocated for the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project across the Cauvery in Kanakapura taluk, asserting that it poses no threat to Tamil Nadu’s interests. He emphasized that the reservoir is designed for optimal water storage and flood control within Karnataka, potentially benefiting downstream regions by regulating flows during both excess and deficit periods. The project remains a key infrastructure priority for the state government.
The Chief Minister reported that a joint survey has assessed crop losses in several districts including Bidar, Kalaburgi, Belagavi, Gadag and Dharwad, with an aerial survey supplementing ground evaluations. Instructions have been issued to expedite compensation crediting directly into the accounts of affected farmers. This swift response aims to provide immediate relief to agricultural communities impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Siddaramaiah is scheduled to visit New Delhi on November 15 to attend a program hosted by former Union Minister and senior advocate Kapil Sibal. He plans to return to Bengaluru the same day. During the visit, he intends to seek time with Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to discuss a potential cabinet reshuffle if granted an audience.
The announcements reflect Karnataka’s balanced approach to interstate water obligations, agricultural support and political engagements at the national level. With surplus releases easing tensions over Cauvery sharing and proactive measures for farmer compensation, the state government continues to navigate complex regional and administrative challenges.
