Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expanded his cabinet on Monday, inducting 20 legislators as ministers and completing the long-pending exercise to fill vacant positions in the state government. The expansion brought the Congress-led Karnataka cabinet to its full strength after months of internal discussions and consultations within the party. The induction was aimed at ensuring a balance of regional representation, caste equations and political considerations within the government. The Congress leadership had been working on the expansion for several months to accommodate different sections of the party and strengthen its administrative setup in the state.

The newly inducted ministers include P M Narendraswamy, Shivaraj Tangadagi, Rudrappa Lamani, K S Basavanthappa, B Nagendra, T Raghumoorthy, Z Zameer Ahmed Khan, Rizwan Arshad, Santosh Lad and Madhu Bangarappa. The list of new ministers also includes Putturangashetty, Mankala Vaidya, Dr Ajay Singh, N Cheluvarayaswamy, K M Shivalinge Gowda, H C Balakrishna, Gayathri Shanthegowda, Basavaraj Rayareddi, Vijayanand Kashappanavar and Laxman Savadi.

With the induction of the 20 legislators, the Shivakumar-led government has now completed the restructuring of its ministerial team. The move is expected to help the administration focus on governance priorities while addressing demands from different regions and communities within Karnataka. Alongside the cabinet expansion, the Congress government also announced appointments to key legislative positions in the state. GS Patil has been appointed as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, while AS Ponnanna will serve as the Deputy Speaker.

In the Karnataka Legislative Council, Salem Ahmed has been appointed as the Chairperson, while Umashree will take charge as the Deputy Chairperson. The appointments complete the filling of important constitutional posts in the state legislature. The cabinet expansion comes at a crucial time for the Congress government as it looks to consolidate its position in Karnataka and strengthen coordination between the executive and legislative wings. The appointments are also expected to provide representation to leaders from different backgrounds within the party.

The Congress leadership had faced internal discussions over the selection of ministers, with party leaders considering factors such as regional balance, seniority, community representation and organisational requirements before finalising the list. The expanded cabinet will now take responsibility for implementing the government’s policies and addressing key issues facing the state. The newly appointed ministers are expected to assume their portfolios after the formal allocation of departments by the chief minister.
