Several Karnataka athletes selected for the upcoming Asian Games in Japan are facing visa-related hurdles just days before the continental sporting event begins. The athletes were reportedly late additions to the Indian contingent, making the delay in obtaining travel clearances an expected complication rather than an entirely unexpected development. However, the pending visas have created uncertainty for athletes preparing to represent India at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

The affected athletes are part of the group added to the Asian Games list at a late stage. Since their inclusion came after the main selection process and travel arrangements had already progressed, completing the documentation and visa formalities within the available time has become challenging. The situation has raised concerns over whether all the athletes will be able to travel to Japan in time for their respective events and preparations.

Among those reportedly facing the visa hurdle are high jumper Supriya B, pole vaulter Sindhushree G, hammer thrower Praveen Kumar and a 200-metre athlete. Their inclusion reflects Karnataka’s contribution to India’s athletics contingent, but the administrative delay has overshadowed the final stage of their preparations. The athletes now depend on the completion of the necessary formalities before they can join the Indian team in Japan.

The issue comes shortly before the 2026 Asian Games, which are scheduled to be held in Aichi and Nagoya from September 19 to October 4. With the opening ceremony approaching, participating countries and their athletes are completing final travel, accommodation and accreditation arrangements. Any delay in visa clearance at this stage can affect travel schedules, acclimatisation plans and the athletes’ ability to settle into the competition environment.

The situation was not considered entirely surprising because the athletes were late additions to the Asian Games squad. Nevertheless, the visa concerns highlight the difficulties that can arise when selections are finalised close to the start of a major international event. Athletes who have trained for months for the opportunity must now wait for administrative approvals before their participation can be fully confirmed.

The pending clearances remain an important concern for the Karnataka contingent as the Games draw closer. The athletes’ selection has provided them with an opportunity to compete on a major international platform, but their immediate priority is securing the required visas and completing travel arrangements. Further clarity is expected once the formalities are completed and the athletes are able to join the Indian delegation in Japan.
