A 22-year-old man allegedly strangled his wife to death in Kanpur over suspicions of infidelity before walking into a police station and surrendering on January 17, 2026. The accused, identified as Sachin, arrived at Maharajpur police station in tears early Saturday morning, confessing to the crime and revealing that his wife’s body, Shweta, was lying at their rented home wrapped in a blanket. Police immediately took him into custody and rushed to the crime scene in a residential area of the city, where they recovered the body as per his directions. The shocking incident has left the local community stunned.
Sachin and Shweta, originally from Mohanpur village in Fatehpur district, had eloped and married in court against their families’ wishes due to opposition to their relationship. They initially moved to Surat, where Sachin worked in a factory, before relocating to Kanpur about a month ago. In the city, he earned a living as an auto-rickshaw driver while the couple rented a modest room. According to police, frequent arguments plagued their marriage, fueled by trust issues and suspicions of infidelity. A recent heated dispute, even after police counseling, escalated fatally when Sachin allegedly strangled Shweta during an altercation.
After the murder, Sachin reportedly wandered the city for around four hours, spending time near the Clock Tower (Ghantaghar) area. He later told investigators he contemplated fleeing but ultimately decided against it, reflecting on their isolated life together. “We had no one else; we eloped and got married for each other. Now she has no one, and neither do I,” he reportedly said to police before surrendering. The confession came as a dramatic turn, with Sachin approaching officers directly rather than attempting to cover up the crime.

Police have registered a case of murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and begun a detailed investigation into the couple’s background, prior disputes, and any potential witnesses. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death and gather forensic evidence. Authorities are also examining whether ongoing marital counseling or external factors played a role in the escalating tensions that led to the tragic outcome.
The incident highlights persistent issues of domestic violence, trust problems in young marriages, and the pressures faced by couples who defy family norms. As details emerge, it has sparked discussions on the need for better support systems for inter-caste or love marriages in conservative settings. Sachin remains in police custody, with further interrogations expected to uncover the full sequence of events leading to the murder.
