In a groundbreaking move towards greener energy, IndianOil’s Panipat refinery in Haryana has received the prestigious International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) ISCC CORSIA certification to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from used cooking oil.
This technology transforms discarded cooking oil, collected from large hotels and food chains, into eco-friendly fuel that can be blended up to 50 percent with conventional jet fuel, drastically reducing emissions from air travel. IndianOil aims to produce approximately 35,000 tonnes of SAF annually by the end of this year, meeting India’s mandate of 1 percent SAF blending in international aviation fuel by 2027.
The initiative involves systematic collection of used cooking oil from major suppliers such as restaurant chains and snack manufacturers, which previously was largely exported. While the company finds it easier to source from large establishments, collecting oil from smaller users and households remains a challenge.
The Panipat refinery’s SAF production marks a significant step in India’s energy transition and sets a benchmark for domestic refiners to scale sustainable fuel production. Alongside SAF, IndianOil is also advancing other green technologies, including setting up a Rs 5,000 crore Butyl Acrylate plant in Gujarat to reduce paint feedstock imports and commissioning a 10,000-tonne green hydrogen plant at Panipat.
Chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney highlighted that IndianOil’s innovations in renewable energy and sustainable solutions position the company at the forefront of India’s green revolution. The SAF certification confirms the fuel’s compliance with strict lifecycle carbon emission standards, encouraging Indian airlines to adopt cleaner fuel alternatives.
As India strives to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, IndianOil’s breakthrough in converting waste cooking oil to SAF marks a promising milestone towards sustainable and carbon-neutral aviation.
