Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami has highlighted the long-standing tradition of cultural and intellectual exchange between India and China, stating that mutual learning of languages and ideas has been a defining feature of the relationship between the two ancient civilisations for more than two millennia. He made the remarks during a lecture at Beijing Foreign Studies University, where he interacted with students and faculty members.
Doraiswami, who recently assumed charge as India’s envoy to China, addressed a gathering at the premier language institution, which is known for offering courses in more than 100 languages, including several Indian languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Sanskrit, Urdu, and the recently introduced Punjabi. The institution plays a key role in training Chinese students, diplomats, and media professionals in foreign languages.
During his lecture, the ambassador underlined that engagement between India and China has historically been shaped by sustained exchanges in language, philosophy, science, art, and technology. He cited examples ranging from the Mauryan period to modern times, noting that interactions between the two civilisations have contributed to mutual enrichment and knowledge-sharing over centuries.

He further observed that such intellectual and cultural exchanges are becoming increasingly relevant today, as both countries undergo rapid economic, technological, and social transformation. According to him, deeper academic cooperation and people-to-people engagement are essential to improving understanding of each other’s contemporary realities.
The Indian Embassy in Beijing, in a post on social media platform X, said the lecture also reflected on India’s ongoing changes and emphasised the importance of strengthening educational and cultural linkages. It added that Doraiswami stressed how historical exchanges had consistently generated mutual benefit and remain significant in the present global context.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion in which students raised questions on India-China relations, culture, and language studies. During his visit, Doraiswami was also briefed on the activities of the university by Beijing Foreign Studies University President Jia Wenjian, underscoring ongoing academic engagement between the two sides.
