India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi held a meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka on Monday, with several issues concerning bilateral relations reportedly coming up for discussion. The meeting was described as positive by Indian government sources, while the Bangladesh Prime Minister's Office indicated that the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was among the matters discussed.
According to the Indian High Commission, Trivedi conveyed New Delhi's intention to work with Bangladesh in a positive, constructive and forward-looking manner. The two sides exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations with a people-centric approach. Trivedi also emphasised the importance of maintaining good relations between the neighbouring countries.
Speaking after the meeting, Trivedi described the discussion with Rahman as productive and stressed that differences between India and Bangladesh could be addressed through dialogue. He also extended an invitation from New Delhi for the Bangladesh prime minister to visit India. Trivedi said the two countries share common aspirations and expressed optimism that outstanding issues would be resolved through engagement.

The Bangladesh Prime Minister's Office, however, provided additional details about the issues raised during the meeting. According to its press release, the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and the return of a suspect in the murder of Osman Hadi were among the key matters discussed. The Bangladesh side also expressed hope that India would expedite the process concerning Hasina's extradition.
Trivedi is now travelling to Delhi to brief the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of External Affairs on his discussions with the Bangladesh prime minister. The meeting comes as both countries continue to address several bilateral matters while seeking to maintain engagement and strengthen relations. Trivedi also held a separate meeting with Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed during his visit to Dhaka.
The discussions around Sheikh Hasina's extradition could remain a significant issue in India-Bangladesh relations. While Bangladesh has sought her return, the available account does not provide details of India's position on the request during the meeting. Further discussions between the two governments are expected as New Delhi reviews the issues raised during the high commissioner's talks in Dhaka.
