The Indian Coast Guard carried out a swift 90-minute rescue operation on Tuesday night, saving six fishermen from a sinking boat off the Karnataka coast in the Arabian Sea. The emergency mission was launched after a distress call was received from a fishing vessel named “Manju Matha”, which had suffered hull damage and began taking on seawater approximately 33 nautical miles offshore. The prompt response helped avert what could have been a major maritime tragedy.
The distressed vessel, belonging to fishermen from Udupi, was reported to be rapidly losing stability due to water ingress. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the Indian Coast Guard deployed its ship ICGS Sachet to locate and assist the stranded crew. Despite challenging sea conditions and low visibility at night, the rescue team successfully tracked the boat and reached the site in time to prevent it from sinking completely.
Upon arrival, Coast Guard personnel assessed the situation and initiated an immediate evacuation of the six fishermen onboard. The operation involved the use of remote-operated lifebuoys and other specialised rescue equipment to safely retrieve the crew from the unstable vessel. Officials said the coordinated effort and quick decision-making were crucial in ensuring that all lives were saved within a short span of around 90 minutes.

The rescued fishermen were brought aboard the Coast Guard vessel without injuries and were provided necessary assistance. Following the successful evacuation, ICGS Sachet began its return journey towards New Mangalore, where the crew is expected to be disembarked and further formalities completed. Authorities confirmed that the fishing boat had sustained significant damage and was at risk of sinking if help had been delayed.
The operation highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s rapid response capabilities and operational readiness in maritime emergencies. Officials said the mission reflects the force’s commitment to safeguarding lives at sea under its motto “Vayam Rakshamah” (We Protect). The successful rescue once again underscores the importance of coordinated search-and-rescue systems along India’s vast coastline, especially during adverse weather conditions.
