The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an urgent forecast predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh through September 15, raising concerns about potential flooding, landslides, and transportation disruptions. The weather alert, released on Thursday, targets multiple districts, urging residents and local authorities to stay vigilant as the state prepares for a prolonged wet spell.
The IMD’s meteorological centre in Itanagar has identified Tawang, West Kameng, Papum Pare, East Kameng, Lower Subansiri, East Siang, West Siang, Dibang Valley, and Anjaw as areas likely to experience heavy showers on Thursday, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. A ‘yellow’ warning, indicating the need for awareness, has been issued for these districts due to risks of waterlogging and minor disruptions to local transport networks.
On Friday, the IMD expects scattered to fairly widespread rainfall in East Kameng, Papum Pare, Pakke-Kessang, West Kameng, East Siang, and Dibang Valley, with thunderstorms likely to persist. The forecast intensifies for Saturday, with an ‘orange’ alert issued for central and eastern Arunachal, including Namsai, Changlang, Tirap, Lohit, and parts of Lower Dibang Valley. This alert signals the need for preparedness, as heavy rainfall could lead to flooding in low-lying areas and rising river levels.

By Sunday, the rain is expected to spread further, covering western districts like Tawang, West Kameng, and East Kameng, as well as Upper Subansiri, West Siang, and Upper Siang. The IMD has warned of very heavy rainfall in isolated pockets, with moderate to heavy rain across most other regions. The wet spell is projected to peak by September 15, with Tirap, Longding, Namsai, Changlang, and Lower Dibang Valley facing risks of extremely heavy rainfall.
The IMD has highlighted significant hazards, including potential landslides, overflowing streams, and disrupted road connectivity in Arunachal’s hilly terrain. Local administrations have been advised to remain on high alert, with emergency response teams on standby to address any crises. Residents are urged to take precautionary measures, avoid low-lying areas, and stay updated on weather alerts as the state navigates this challenging weather event.
