Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again drawn attention for his strategic political approach, as early trends from the Assam Assembly elections indicate strong performance by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies. Widely regarded as a key architect of the party’s electoral machinery in the state, Sarma’s pre-poll planning and organisational outreach are being credited as significant factors behind the results.
In the run-up to the elections, Sarma focused heavily on constituency-level engagement, personally assessing political dynamics across Assam. Known for his hands-on style, he reportedly monitored even minor local issues and maintained direct communication with party workers, ensuring ground-level feedback was incorporated into campaign strategy. His approach emphasised micromanagement and continuous voter outreach.
One of the key elements of his campaign strategy was the “Jan Ashirwad Yatra", undertaken in February, during which he travelled across nearly 100 of Assam’s 126 Assembly constituencies. The initiative served a dual purpose — mobilising support for the BJP while also evaluating the party’s real-time standing in different regions to refine candidate selection and campaign priorities.

Based on these assessments, the BJP made significant decisions in ticket distribution, including replacing several sitting legislators. Reports suggest that 19 of the 60 incumbent MLAs, including a minister, were denied tickets, a move that carried political risk but was aimed at improving the party’s electoral prospects and reducing anti-incumbency factors within constituencies.
Sarma’s leadership style, often described as highly proactive and accessible, allowed him to quickly mobilise party workers and respond to local political developments. His ability to maintain close coordination with grassroots workers is considered a major strength in the BJP’s organisational structure in Assam, especially during tightly contested elections.
As counting trends continue to unfold, the BJP’s strong performance in Assam is being linked to a combination of alliance management, candidate selection strategy, and intensive ground campaigning. Political observers note that the outcome underscores the importance of pre-poll planning and constituency-level insight in shaping electoral success in the state.
