Former Ambassador and Chairman of the India Trade Promotion Organisation, Jawed Ashraf, has been conferred the rank of Commandeur of France’s prestigious Legion d'honneur. The distinction, which is the third-highest honour in the French national order, recognises Ashraf’s significant contributions to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between India and France.
The insignia was presented by Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of France to India, at a formal ceremony held in New Delhi. The event was attended by senior dignitaries, including Ajit Doval, underlining the importance of the occasion in the context of bilateral relations. Speaking after receiving the honour, Ashraf expressed gratitude and described it as a moment of great pride. He noted that being recognised by the French Republic holds special significance, particularly given the legacy of distinguished Indians who have received the award before him.
Ashraf highlighted that he is the eighth Indian to be conferred with this distinction. He joins an eminent group that includes J. R. D. Tata, Ratan Tata, Amartya Sen, Ravi Shankar, Satyajit Ray, Manna Dey, and S. H. Raza.

He further stated that the award reflects France’s deep respect for India and its appreciation for diplomacy as a tool to build lasting international partnerships. According to him, the recognition symbolises the growing strength and maturity of India-France relations across multiple sectors.
The Legion d'honneur, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, is one of France’s highest civilian honours and is awarded to individuals for outstanding service in various fields. The Commandeur rank is among the top tiers, making it a rare and prestigious recognition for global leaders and achievers.
The honour also comes at a time when India and France continue to expand their strategic partnership, with collaboration spanning defence, trade, climate action, and cultural exchange. Ashraf’s recognition is seen as a testament to the enduring and evolving relationship between the two nations.
