Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro is facing a corruption and money laundering investigation just weeks before the country’s October election, adding fresh pressure to the right-wing campaign. Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, is challenging leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the presidential race. The investigation was disclosed in a newly released court document and concerns alleged crimes connected to the financing and production of a forthcoming film about his father. According to the court document, police have been investigating Flavio Bolsonaro since July over possible crimes “in the context of financing the production” of the film.
The investigation is part of a wider corruption case surrounding the company involved in producing the biopic about the former president. Police carried out dozens of raids on Thursday as authorities examined allegations involving the alleged embezzlement of public funds by the company that produced the film. The movie, titled Dark Horse, stars US actor Jim Caviezel as Jair Bolsonaro and portrays the former Brazilian leader. Its production has come under scrutiny as investigators examine the financial circumstances surrounding the project.
The inquiry has emerged as a politically sensitive issue because Flavio Bolsonaro is seeking the presidency while campaigning on the right and is directly connected to the former president whose life is the subject of the film. The investigation comes at a particularly important stage of the election campaign. Flavio Bolsonaro is seeking to succeed his father as the leading figure of Brazil’s political right and is competing against Lula, who is seeking another term as president. The corruption allegations could therefore create an additional challenge for the Bolsonaro campaign, which is attempting to maintain its political momentum ahead of the October vote.

The investigation itself does not prevent Flavio Bolsonaro from contesting the presidency under Brazilian law. The probe can therefore continue while he remains an active candidate in the October election. The case nevertheless adds a new complication to an already closely watched contest between the Bolsonaro camp and Lula. Police are examining allegations of corruption and money laundering in connection with the financing of the film, while the candidate maintains that the production was lawful. With the election approaching, the investigation into the project and the police raids against the company producing Dark Horse are likely to remain a significant issue surrounding Flavio Bolsonaro’s campaign.
