The Pune leg of the FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2024-25 saw Indian players delivering noteworthy performances in the 10-player round-robin format which is a crucial event in the series leading to the Women's Candidates Tournament.
India's IM Divya Deshmukj, along with GM Zhu Jiner, IM Polina Shuvalova, and IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul were winners yesterday in their respective matches against IM Nurgyul Salimova, GM Harika Dronavalli, IM Alina Kashlinskaya, and IM Salome Melia.
Divya, the 18-year-old from Nagpur, showcased her tactical brilliance against Salimova. Despite an iffy 41st move that prolonged the game, Divya maintained her composure and converted her advantage into a win after 53 moves. Her performance as a wild-card entrant has been a highlight of the tournament so far.

In an all-Indian clash, Koneru Humpy and R Vaishali played a finely balanced game that began with an Italian Opening. The match transitioned into an equal endgame, with both players holding double rooks and bishops. After 54 moves, the game ended in a draw.
Dronavalli Harika faced a tough challenge against Zhu Jiner, the second-highest-ranked player in the tournament. Playing the French Defence, Harika delayed castling in an attempt to open a file toward Zhu's king. However, her position weakened by the 26th move, and Zhu capitalised on the opportunity, forcing Harika to resign after 52 moves.
The Pune leg is the penultimate event in the six-leg series, with players competing for two spots in the Women's Candidates Tournament. The winners will get €18,000 and 130 Grand Prix points. Indian players will aim to build on their performances as the tournament progresses. Divya Deshmukh's strong start has been particularly encouraging, while Humpy and Vaishali remain key contenders. Harika, despite her setback, has the experience to bounce back in the upcoming rounds.
