The FBI has released surveillance images and videos of a masked individual believed to be linked to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, marking the first major public breakthrough in a case that has drawn national attention for more than a week. The footage shows a person wearing a backpack and ski mask outside Guthrie’s home in a secluded neighbourhood near Tucson on the night she vanished.
According to investigators, the videos capture the suspect approaching the front door, tilting their head away from a doorbell camera while moving under an archway. The individual appears to have a handgun holster and is seen holding a flashlight in their mouth while attempting to obscure the camera using a gloved hand and part of a plant taken from the yard. The combined footage runs less than a minute and does not show what happened to Nancy Guthrie after the encounter.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the “armed individual” appeared to have tampered with the surveillance camera. The images were recovered from backend systems after days of efforts to retrieve lost or corrupted data. Former FBI agent Katherine Schweit said the footage could generate crucial leads, noting that even fully covered suspects can be identified through body type, movement, and gait.

Authorities believe Nancy Guthrie was abducted against her will. She was last seen at her home on January 31 and reported missing the following day. DNA testing confirmed that blood found on her porch belonged to her. Officials have said she suffers from high blood pressure, mobility issues, and a heart condition and requires daily medication.
Savannah Guthrie shared the newly released images on social media, urging the public to contact the FBI or local sheriff with any information. The post quickly drew thousands of responses. The family has issued multiple emotional appeals, at times addressing suspected abductors directly, while stressing their belief that she is still alive.
The case has prompted widespread public concern, with the FBI placing digital billboards in major US cities seeking tips. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump had viewed the footage and encouraged anyone with information to come forward. Investigators say no suspects have been identified so far, and there is no confirmed ongoing communication with those believed to be responsible.
