The Election Commission has put in place heightened security and extensive surveillance measures for the repoll scheduled on Thursday in West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency, following allegations of large-scale EVM tampering that led to the countermanding of polling last month. The constituency, which has 285 polling booths, will see a significantly increased deployment of security personnel this time. Officials confirmed that around eight personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)—equivalent to a full section—will be stationed at each booth, doubling the deployment compared to the earlier polling on April 29.
A senior official from the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office said the enhanced security setup has been designed to eliminate any scope for irregularities. Approximately 35 companies of central forces have been mobilised for the repoll, making the overall security presence nearly twice as strong as during the previous voting phase. In addition to ground deployment, 30 quick response teams will remain on standby across the constituency to address any incident of unrest or disruption. Officials said these teams are intended to ensure immediate intervention even in cases of minor disturbances during the voting process.
Surveillance measures have also been significantly strengthened. The Election Commission will install two web cameras inside each polling booth and one outside, enabling continuous live webcasting of both the voting process and surrounding areas. Monitoring will be conducted from the offices of the District Election Officer (DEO) and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), with drone surveillance also under consideration to further enhance oversight.
