Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extended Eid greetings to citizens on Saturday, saying that the true joy of the festival would be realised with the victory of her party, the Awami League. In a statement shared by the party on X, Hasina stressed her continued commitment to the welfare and freedom of the country’s people, despite being physically away from Bangladesh.
“Even while staying away from my homeland, on this blessed day of Eid, I pray that every person in the country remains well. May Eid become a true festival for every hard-working and labouring individual,” Hasina said. She added that she has always strived to ensure that basic needs are met so that citizens do not succumb to poverty or fall victim to domestic and foreign conspiracies.
Hasina alleged that a grave conspiracy has affected the lives of Bangladesh’s poor and claimed that since August 5, 2024, the country has resembled a “prison,” with writers, journalists, and political activists being jailed. “I express my sympathy and sorrow to these innocent people and their families. True Eid joy will come at the moment of our victory,” she said, reaffirming her willingness to sacrifice for the freedom of the people.

Criticising the former Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, Hasina said flawed policies, combined with global economic crises caused by wars in the Middle East and elsewhere, have adversely affected Bangladesh. She noted that the poor are struggling to maintain a normal standard of living under the current conditions.
Highlighting the socio-economic challenges, Hasina urged affluent and well-off members of society to support the underprivileged, helping ensure that every citizen can experience happiness and the true spirit of Eid.Through her message, Hasina called for unity, compassion, and resilience among Bangladeshis, framing the festival as a reminder of shared responsibility and hope amid ongoing political and economic challenges.
