Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched a sharp political attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, claiming that the state is burdened by rising debt and arguing that a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government would be better positioned to address its fiscal and governance challenges.
Speaking at a political event, Fadnavis criticised the administration led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that financial mismanagement and growing liabilities have constrained the state’s development capacity. He said that West Bengal required a change in governance model to accelerate economic recovery and improve fiscal discipline.
The remarks come amid intensifying political exchanges between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress, particularly as both parties prepare for upcoming electoral battles in various states. West Bengal, in particular, has remained a key political battleground, with both sides frequently accusing each other of misgovernance and political aggression.

Fadnavis argued that states governed by the BJP have adopted more “pro-growth” policies, pointing to infrastructure expansion, investment attraction, and welfare delivery reforms as comparative advantages. He contrasted this with what he described as West Bengal’s slower economic momentum, though no detailed fiscal data was cited during his speech.
The Trinamool Congress, meanwhile, has consistently rejected such criticism, maintaining that West Bengal has made progress in welfare delivery, industrial outreach, and social schemes despite national-level economic pressures. Party leaders have in the past accused the BJP of using centralised political narratives to undermine opposition-ruled states.
Political analysts note that economic claims around state debt often become central themes in inter-party campaigning, especially in large and politically significant states like West Bengal. However, they also emphasise that such assertions require careful examination of fiscal reports, borrowing patterns, and expenditure structures published in official state budgets.
The exchange adds to the ongoing national political discourse where governance performance, economic management, and federal financial relations remain key points of contention between ruling and opposition parties.
