A large-scale search operation is ongoing to locate 19-year-old Akash Sharma, who fell into a creek near Thane station while traveling on a local train on September 4, 2025. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. when Sharma, a resident of Gholai Nagar in Kalwa, lost his balance and plunged into the water body from the Vitawa railway bridge while en route from Mulund to Kalwa, according to Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Management Cell.
Rescue efforts began immediately, involving disaster management staff, the fire brigade, Thane Disaster Response Force, local residents, and fishermen, who deployed two boats to search until 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. Despite extensive efforts, Sharma could not be found. Operations resumed early Friday between 4 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. but were halted due to strong currents in the creek. Tadvi stated that the search would continue as soon as conditions permit, with teams remaining on high alert.
The incident has raised concerns about safety on local trains, particularly near water bodies, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to locate the missing youth. The Thane Municipal Corporation and local community are united in their hope for Sharma’s safe recovery, with ongoing monitoring of the creek’s conditions to resume the rescue mission.
