The Delhi government has launched the 'Vidya Vahini' scheme to provide free bicycles to eligible girl students studying in government schools, with the aim of making their daily commute safer and more convenient. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the programme at the East Vinod Nagar Sports Complex, marking the beginning of a citywide initiative to improve access to education for girls.

In the first phase of the scheme, more than 3,000 Class 9 students received bicycles during the launch event. The government plans to distribute free bicycles to nearly 1.40 lakh eligible girl students across Delhi in multiple phases, ensuring that transportation challenges do not become a barrier to continuing their education.

Addressing students at the event, Chief Minister Gupta said the initiative is designed to promote confidence, independence and equal opportunities for girls. She encouraged students to pursue their education with determination, adding that easier access to schools would help them focus on their studies and build a stronger future. The bicycles, she said, would also enhance mobility while giving students greater dignity and self-reliance.

The government expects the scheme to improve school attendance, reduce dropout rates and ease parents' concerns regarding the safety of their daughters during their daily commute. Officials believe better transportation facilities can play a significant role in ensuring that more girls remain enrolled in school, particularly after entering secondary education.

Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said the programme specifically addresses the transport-related challenges faced by many students after Class 9, when schools may be located farther from their homes. The Delhi government has approved around Rs 90 crore for the implementation of the bicycle distribution programme, which will cover eligible beneficiaries across the national capital in a phased manner.

The 'Vidya Vahini' scheme forms part of the Delhi government's broader efforts to strengthen girls' education, improve regular school attendance and support the safety and empowerment of female students. By addressing mobility-related barriers, the initiative aims to create a more inclusive learning environment and encourage more girls to complete their education.
