Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar to conduct a comprehensive audit of unauthorized and rule-violating constructions across the national capital. The move comes after a five-story building collapsed in the Saidulajab area near Saket, resulting in the deaths of six people. The government has also sought a detailed report on illegal structures identified across residential, commercial, and market zones in Delhi.
The collapse occurred on May 30 and claimed the lives of five medical and engineering graduates along with the owner of a nearby canteen. Following a visit to the accident site, the chief minister instructed civic authorities to review all previously flagged illegal constructions and submit details of actions taken against such properties. Officials said the administration wants a thorough assessment of buildings that may pose safety risks.
According to government sources, the MCD has been asked to launch a citywide inspection drive to identify unauthorized buildings, illegal extensions, and structural violations. Authorities have also been directed to initiate action against property owners as well as officials who may have failed to prevent unlawful construction activities. The administration has stressed that public safety will remain the top priority.

In a statement issued after inspecting the site, Rekha Gupta said strict action would be taken against all unauthorized constructions and that accountability would be fixed at every level. She asserted that no builder, official, or authority would be above the law if found responsible for violations. The chief minister also ordered a magisterial inquiry to determine the exact cause of the collapse and identify those accountable.
The inquiry will be led by the South Delhi District Magistrate and will examine possible construction irregularities, safety violations, and administrative lapses. Gupta has additionally ordered an immediate survey of dilapidated and unsafe buildings in Saidulajab and surrounding areas. She warned that officials who protected illegal constructions or neglected their duties would face strict action under the law.
