Over 1,400 devotees from the national capital departed on Thursday as Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off the “Somnath Swabhiman Parv Yatra,” a special pilgrimage train journeying to the historic Somnath Temple in Gujarat. The initiative, organised as a fully sponsored spiritual tour, aims to reconnect participants with India’s cultural and religious heritage.
The ceremonial flag-off was also attended by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, highlighting the central and state-level coordination behind the programme. Officials said the special train carrying the pilgrims is expected to reach Somnath the following morning, where arrangements have been made for a multi-day stay. The devotees are scheduled to remain there from May 1 to May 3, during which they will visit the temple and nearby sacred sites.
According to organisers, the entire pilgrimage has been arranged free of cost, with the Gujarat government providing accommodation, meals, drinking water, and logistical support. The initiative is part of a broader cultural outreach programme designed to promote awareness of India’s spiritual traditions and historical religious centres. Authorities described the yatra as an effort to make pilgrimage travel more accessible to people from different sections of society.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the yatra holds symbolic importance as it coincides with what is being described as the completion of 1,000 years of the Somnath temple’s historical legacy. She said sending a large group of pilgrims from Delhi reflects “pride in India’s civilisational heritage” and represents a renewed focus on cultural continuity. Officials also noted that such initiatives aim to encourage participation in traditional pilgrimage circuits across the country.
Devotees who joined the journey expressed appreciation for the arrangements, noting that the train facilities were well-organised and comfortable. Many said it was a memorable experience even before reaching the destination, highlighting the convenience and coordination provided by the organisers. Some participants also described the initiative as a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with long-standing religious traditions and shared cultural practices.
The “Somnath Swabhiman Parv Yatra” is being positioned as part of a larger effort to strengthen cultural tourism and pilgrimage infrastructure in India. By facilitating large-scale group travel to significant religious destinations, authorities hope to promote both spiritual engagement and awareness of India’s historical heritage sites.
