The Indian National Congress, led by General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, on Tuesday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi break his silence on US President Donald Trump’s claim—repeated at least 21 times in 59 days—that he orchestrated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan during their May 2025 conflict. Speaking on Monday, Trump linked the resolution of the four-day clash, sparked by India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, to trade leverage, stating, “We stopped [the conflict] over trade… We said we’re not going to be dealing with you at all if you’re going to fight.”
Ramesh questioned Modi’s inaction, noting Trump’s assertion that both nations, nuclear powers, ceased hostilities to preserve access to US markets and investments, especially as Trump announced progress on a US-India trade deal. “When will Narendra Modi, once called BJP’s ‘trump card,’ address this issue?” Ramesh asked, highlighting India’s official stance that the May 10 ceasefire resulted from direct military talks, with Pakistan’s DGMO requesting de-escalation after India’s counterstrike.
Congress leaders, including Supriya Shrinate and Pawan Khera, amplified the issue on X, with @INCIndia posting, “Trump claims 21 times he stopped an India-Pakistan nuclear war. Why is Modi silent?” India’s Foreign Ministry, via Vikram Misri, has consistently rejected third-party mediation, emphasizing bilateral resolution. The controversy, fueled by Trump’s narrative, risks complicating US-India trade talks aiming for a “mini deal” by August 2025, as domestic critics like Rahul Gandhi accuse Modi of compromising sovereignty.
