Gandhi described his visit as essential, saying he came to pay respect to Chandy, whose enduring connection with the people of Kerala continues to resonate even after his passing in 2023.

Recalling the late leader’s participation in the Bharat Jodo Yatra despite ill health, Rahul highlighted the scale of public grief during Chandy’s funeral procession as a testament to the affection he commanded. The Congress leader’s remarks underscored Chandy’s long-standing influence in Kerala politics, where he never lost an assembly election from 1970 until his death and served twice as Chief Minister.
