Puthupally became the stage for an emotional and symbolic campaign event on Wednesday as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi joined Chandy Oommen’s bicycle campaign, invoking the legacy of the late Oommen Chandy. Gandhi described his visit as essential, saying he came to pay respect to Chandy, whose enduring connection with the people of Kerala continues to resonate even after his passing in 2023.
Recalling the late leader’s participation in the Bharat Jodo Yatra despite ill health, Rahul highlighted the scale of public grief during Chandy’s funeral procession as a testament to the affection he commanded. The Congress leader’s remarks underscored Chandy’s long-standing influence in Kerala politics, where he never lost an assembly election from 1970 until his death and served twice as Chief Minister.
Adding a visual and energetic dimension to the campaign, Rahul joined Chandy Oommen, the young MLA and son of the late leader, on a bicycle ride through the heart of Puthupally. Oommen has built a grassroots campaign identity centered on cycling across the constituency, engaging directly with voters while minimizing the use of publicity material. Gandhi’s participation symbolized continuity and support for the new generation of leadership.

The duo cycled together from Puthupally to nearby Kanjikuzhy, a move that quickly captured public attention. Supporters saw the ride as more than a campaign gesture; it represented a passing of the torch from a widely admired leader to the next generation seeking to carry forward his legacy in a humble and accessible manner.
Later, Rahul Gandhi shared his experience on social media, describing the atmosphere on the ground as “electric” and reiterating the campaign message: “The cycle of change is in motion. Keralam will win. UDF will lead.” His comments reinforced the dual themes of sentiment and renewal that defined the event.
As Kerala heads to the polls, Puthupally stands out as a constituency where memory, emotion, and a renewed political message converge, with the campaign blending tribute, visibility, and grassroots engagement to energize voters in the lead-up to the elections.
